Outside Lighting – Decorating for Christmas!

It's the most wonderful time of the year again & the moment to put up the Christmas lights has arrived!

Whether you go all out and deck out your entire house or if you prefer something more subtle, it's important you know how to safely put up your Christmas lights.

How to Hang Your Christmas Lights

Things to think about

Before buying your lights, there are a couple of things to take in to consideration.

  • What type of effect do you want? – Think about the type of Christmas lights you want for the outside of your house. Choices range from fairy, lantern, net, rope or more.
  • Mains or battery powered lights – Do you want your Christmas lights to be powered by the mains supply in your house or would you prefer battery operated lights? If you'd like mains powered lights, you'll need waterproof extension cables as well as an outdoor power supply. You'll also need to measure the distance between the power supply and where you wish to hang the lights so you buy the right size cables.
  • Weather-resistant lights – As the winter months are a lot wetter, you'll need to buy waterproof lights and make sure the adapters are kept dry.

Let's get hanging

When you've bought the Christmas lights, it's important you test that they work before you hang them outside. Once you know that they work perfectly, you'll need some suitable ladders. If you don't have any at home, you can hire ladders from HSS.

There are different ways you can hang your Christmas lights outside of your house. You can use gutter hooks & decorating clips, you can drill holes in the mortar or you can use strong glue with a glue gun. Once you have planned out where your lights will be, you can use your ladders to start positioning & installing your festive lights.

When all the lights have been positioned & placed over the light hooks, simply switch them on and enjoy the view.
